Dr. Robert LaRose of Michigan State University Speaks to DCT’s Students

Topic: Media Habits in the New Media Environment

The role of automatic, habitual patterns of media use has been overlooked in the annals of media research. Yet, half of all media behaviors may be determined by habits and prior research indicates that habits may be more powerful than conscious selection processes when explaining media attendance. New media research has exposed the importance of habitual selections in studies of problematic, compulsive and addictive use among normal populations. Dr. LaRose examines the history of media habit research and the current state of knowledge in social psychology and communication research. He will examine models of new media attendance and adoption that incorporate habits and outline an agenda for future research.
