Due to the rapid development and evolution of media technologies, the trends of ‘interdisciplinary’ and ‘transformation’ in studying communication and media have posed a great challenge to the categorization of media in the communication field. Meanwhile, these two trends, having crossed national borders and spreading globally, also result in interference and interaction among traditional formats of media contents. Behind these spreading trends, ‘digitalization’ and ‘globalization’ are two major driving forces that all academics have to take into consideration while studying today’s media. First of all, moving images become of platform-crossing contents from traditional cinemas to mobile devices. Newspapers can be published on paper or as digital e-papers. The compatibility and convergence between Television and computer make the transferring of information between these two devices easily and smooth than before. Second of all, under the trend of globalization, border-crossing finance, ethnic, technology, media, and ideology shape a unique landscape. Therefore, fronting the unstoppable wave of globalization and digitalization, media communities should equip themselves with ability to respond the ever-changing culture, society, politics, and economy. Consequently, examining contemporary trend of ‘transmedia’ from a pioneering angle of ‘interdisciplinary’ will surely become a must attitude towards current status of ever-changing media environment.

Furthermore, during the transforming processes of media convergence, new technology, and traditional technology, all related contents are not only outcomes of transformation in media structures, paradoxically, but diversified styles developed also become of the igniter to bring changes to society and culture. Accordingly, technology, economy, and media types are going through structural transformation; contents and styles become of indications of textual transformation; and entertainment and consumption reveal the transformation of audiences’ practices. These transformations are intercultural, border-crossing, and connected to each other as an inseparable unity. Hence, based on a macro-scaled media frame, inspecting every structural change systematically in detail without disjunction becomes an essential task, in order to understand current new media and new trends. ‘Interdisciplinary and transformation’ are chosen as the major theme of this year’s conference. Many issues presenting great challenges to the field of communication in Taiwan during the first decade of this century will be discussed from perspectives of interdisciplinary cooperation, structural transition in media ecology, trend of technological convergence, and changes in industrial policy.
